Spider Vein Removal

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are often red or blue and are close to the surface of the skin. They radiate out from a central point, almost spider-like. Any activity that puts pressure on the veins, such as gaining weight and sitting or standing for long periods of time, can contribute to their development.

It is estimated that almost three-quarters of all adult women have spider veins. The condition is associated with increased pressure to the veins and appear most often in the legs. Since the most common causes are the normal monthly fluctuations of the female cycle and pregnancy, spider veins occur most often in women. Although it is less common, they may also appear in men, usually after the age of 30.

What areas of the body can be treated by the spider vein removal procedure?

Spider veins can either cover a very small or very large area of skin. They can look like tree branches or spider webs with jagged lines and can be found and treated on the thighs, calves, ankles and face.

How does the treatment work?

At the Austin Plastic Surgery Insititue, we specialize in skin treatment, such as spider vein removal, to help rid the unsightliness and alleviate any associated pain caused. A procedure called sclerotherapy is used to permanently remove the spider veins. This involves injections of a sodium chloride solution that collapses the veins and causes them to fade away.

Will I need additional treatments?

This treatment will remove the spider vein permanently; however, it does not prevent new spider veins from forming, so further treatments may be necessary.

How long does the treatment take?

Each treatment session lasts about 15 to 45 minutes depending on the condition of the veins. Sclerotherapy requires injections for each inch of spide vein, so anywhere from five to 40 injections may occur during treatment.

Is the procedure painful?

Pain is minmal, no anesthesia is used, and patients only feel a slight needle prick and possibly a mild buring sensation.
