What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to restore a flatter, firmer, and more contoured abdomen. During surgery, excess skin and fat are removed from the midsection, and weakened or separated abdominal muscles are repaired to create a smoother, tighter abdominal profile.

At Austin Plastic Surgery Institute, tummy tuck surgery goes beyond traditional techniques. By combining drainless abdominoplasty, advanced liposuction, and skin-tightening technologies, our surgeons deliver natural-looking, sculpted results with improved comfort and recovery.

What is unique about the APSI tummy tuck?

At APSI, we have developed a technique to optimize results, minimize pain and lessen the recovery. We do not use drains, and this makes it much easier for patients to get around after the surgery. Instead, a series of quilting sutures is used to prevent the shear of the skin and muscle that could produce fluid.

Further, Exparel is injected in precise fashion to lessen postoperative discomfort and lasts for several days. This, along with our Rapid Recovery program, focuses on non-narcotic medication to reduce the amount of narcotics needed. This lessens side effects like nausea, constipation, sleep disturbances, etc.

The final contour is defined and sculpted using SAFE lipo, often in conjunction with BodyTite and Morpheus8 to enhance fat removal in the back and waistline while also tightening the skin. The scar is kept very low so it can be hidden in most everything including undergarments. Finally, we make a very unique and natural belly button so that it does not look like a noticeable circle on the tummy.

What are the benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck offers both aesthetic and functional benefits, including:

  • A flatter, firmer abdominal contour
  • Removal of excess, stretched skin
  • Repair of separated abdominal muscles
  • Improved waistline definition
  • Enhanced clothing fit and confidence
  • Long-lasting results when weight is maintained
  • A smoother, more youthful abdominal appearance

Patients often describe tummy tuck surgery as life-changing, particularly after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

Am I a candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck in Austin if you:

  • Have loose or sagging abdominal skin after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Experience abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti)
  • Maintain a stable, healthy weight
  • Are finished having children
  • Are in good overall physical health
  • Do not smoke or are willing to stop before surgery
  • Feel frustrated that diet and exercise cannot correct abdominal laxity

A consultation at APSI allows your surgeon to determine whether a full, mini, extended, circumferential, or Tite Tummy Tuck is best for your anatomy and goals.

Tummy Tuck FAQS

Types of tummy tuck surgeries

Full tummy tuck (traditional tummy tuck)

For a full tummy tuck, the skin between the belly button and the area above the pubic hair is removed. The scar is kept very low and goes from one hip bone to the other. Once the skin is removed, the abdominal muscles can be tightened. The upper skin is then advanced downward over the firmed abdominal muscles, and the original navel is brought out through its new position.

A traditional (full) tummy tuck in Austin is suitable for both men and women who have a moderate amount of excess skin in their midsection. It is commonly performed on women post-pregnancy. During this surgery, the incision extends from hip bone to hip bone, which grants the surgeon access to a greater portion of the internal separated muscles.  The entire waistline is treated in a 360-degree fashion. Posteriorly, BodyTite and/or SAFE lipo is done to remove excess fat and tighten the skin to circumferentially cinch the waistline.

Mini tummy tuck

Individuals who don’t have much skin excess and have minimal diastasis but desire a flatter tummy may be good candidates for a mini tummy tuck. These patients have loose abdominal muscles only below the belly button, but the muscles aren’t stretched to the point where a full tummy tuck is necessary.

During surgery, a shorter incision is made along the lower abdomen, liposuction is used to remove excess fat, and the remaining skin is pulled tight. The belly button is not affected by this surgery. It is mostly reserved for very tall women, or those who have a naturally high belly button with minimal skin excess.

Extended tummy tuck

The extended tummy tuck is reserved for patients who require major skin tightening and body contouring that extends all the way to the back. It is often done for those following major weight loss. The extended tummy tuck requires a longer incision that extends beyond the hips, toward the back. Liposuction is used and the excess skin is trimmed away and tightened. The belly button is repositioned during this surgery.

Circumferential tummy tuck

The circumferential tummy tuck is reserved for patients who require complete circumferential skin removal and body contouring that extends all the way around. It is mainly done for those following a massive weight loss.

Tite Tummy Tuck

For those seeking a more sculpted, firmer abdomen, the Tite Tummy Tuck at Austin Plastic Surgery Institute is a groundbreaking innovation in body sculpting. Designed by our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Scott Haydon and Dr. Justin Booth, this innovative procedure combines multiple advanced techniques to deliver superior contouring and skin tightening for dramatic, long-lasting results.

The Tite Tummy Tuck is an advanced, multi-layered approach to body contouring that goes beyond a traditional abdominoplasty. It removes excess skin, tightens abdominal muscles, and incorporates cutting-edge aesthetic technology for enhanced fat reduction and skin rejuvenation. This comprehensive procedure includes:

  • Drainless Abdominoplasty – Unlike traditional tummy tucks, this technique utilizes progressive tension sutures to avoid the need for post-surgical drains, allowing for a more comfortable and seamless recovery.
  • Exparel® Pain Relief – A long-lasting, non-opioid anesthetic, Exparel is injected under ultrasound guidance to significantly reduce discomfort for up to 72 hours, minimizing the need for narcotic pain medications and reducing side effects like nausea and constipation.
  • Liposuction – Stubborn fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise are precisely removed using advanced liposuction techniques, creating a smoother, more contoured figure.
  • BodyTite® – This radiofrequency-assisted liposuction (RFAL) tightens skin and stimulates collagen production, enhancing definition while removing unwanted fat.
  • Morpheus8® – A microneedling + radiofrequency treatment that boosts collagen production, improving skin texture and firmness for a youthful, toned appearance.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Is a tummy tuck the same as liposuction?

No. Liposuction removes excess fat only, while a tummy tuck removes loose skin and tightens abdominal muscles. At APSI, liposuction is often combined with a tummy tuck for optimal contouring.

What makes APSI’s tummy tuck different?

APSI uses drainless abdominoplasty techniques, Exparel® long-lasting pain control, SAFE liposuction, BodyTite®, Morpheus8®, and a Rapid Recovery program to improve comfort, reduce downtime, and enhance results.

Will I have drains after tummy tuck surgery?

No. APSI performs drainless tummy tuck surgery using progressive tension (quilting) sutures to reduce fluid buildup and improve recovery comfort.

How long is tummy tuck recovery?

Most patients return home the same day, begin walking within 24 hours, and resume light activities in 1–2 weeks. Strenuous exercise is typically allowed after about 6 weeks, with results continuing to improve over several months.

What are the risks of a tummy tuck?

Risks may include swelling, bruising, infection, bleeding, scarring, temporary numbness, and delayed healing. Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon and following post-operative instructions helps minimize these risks.

Will my tummy tuck scar be visible?

The incision is placed very low on the abdomen so it can be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear. Scars fade significantly over time.

Can men get a tummy tuck?

Yes. Men with excess abdominal skin, fat, or muscle separation can benefit from tummy tuck surgery and achieve a more contoured, masculine abdomen.

How long do tummy tuck results last?

Tummy tuck results are long-lasting as long as patients maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.

Can a tummy tuck improve posture or back pain?

Some patients experience improved posture and core stability after abdominal muscle repair, which may help reduce back discomfort.
