The tummy tuck procedure at Austin Plastic Surgery Institute, also called abdominoplasty, is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and tighten the underlying muscles. You can create a look that is firm, fit, and sculpted, with our tummy tucks.

Why undergo a tummy tuck?

If you have lost a significant amount of weight or gave birth to children, you may have been left with  excess fat, skin, and stretched tissue on your midsection. Exercise and a healthy diet can help, but overly stretched skin or separated abdominal muscles must be surgically repaired. Only a cosmetic procedure like the tummy tuck can address this loose skin and muscle separation. Imagine the joy of wearing tight clothing, revealing swimsuits, and having a tummy that looks firm, fit, and contoured! It can be life changing.

What is unique about the APSI tummy tuck?

At APSI, we have developed a technique to optimize results, minimize pain and lessen the recovery. We do not use drains, and this makes it much easier for patients to get around after the surgery. Instead, a series of quilting sutures is used to prevent the shear of the skin and muscle that could produce fluid.

Further, Exparel is injected in precise fashion to lessen postoperative discomfort and lasts for several days. This, along with our Rapid Recovery program, focuses on non-narcotic medication to reduce the amount of narcotics needed. This lessens side effects like nausea, constipation, sleep disturbances, etc.

The final contour is defined and sculpted using SAFE lipo, often in conjunction with BodyTite and Morpheus8 to enhance fat removal in the back and waistline while also tightening the skin. The scar is kept very low so it can be hidden in most everything including undergarments. Finally, we make a very unique and natural belly button so that it does not look like a noticeable circle on the tummy.

Types of tummy tuck surgeries

Full tummy tuck (traditional tummy tuck)

For a full tummy tuck, the skin between the belly button and the area above the pubic hair is removed. The scar is kept very low and goes from one hip bone to the other. Once the skin is removed, the abdominal muscles can be tightened. The upper skin is then advanced downward over the firmed abdominal muscles, and the original navel is brought out through its new position.

A traditional (full) tummy tuck is suitable for both men and women who have a moderate amount of excess skin in their midsection. It is commonly performed on women post-pregnancy. During this surgery, the incision extends from hip bone to hip bone, which grants the surgeon access to a greater portion of the internal separated muscles.  The entire waistline is treated in a 360-degree fashion. Posteriorly, BodyTite and/or SAFE lipo is done to remove excess fat and tighten the skin to circumferentially cinch the waistline.

Mini tummy tuck

Individuals who don’t have much skin excess and have minimal diastasis but desire a flatter tummy may be good candidates for a mini tummy tuck. These patients have loose abdominal muscles only below the belly button, but the muscles aren’t stretched to the point where a full tummy tuck is necessary.

During surgery, a shorter incision is made along the lower abdomen, liposuction is used to remove excess fat, and the remaining skin is pulled tight. The belly button is not affected by this surgery. It is mostly reserved for very tall women, or those who have a naturally high belly button with minimal skin excess.

Extended tummy tuck

The extended tummy tuck is reserved for patients who require major skin tightening and body contouring that extends all the way to the back. It is often done for those following major weight loss. The extended tummy tuck requires a longer incision that extends beyond the hips, toward the back. Liposuction is used and the excess skin is trimmed away and tightened. The belly button is repositioned during this surgery.

Circumferential tummy tuck

The circumferential tummy tuck is reserved for patients who require complete circumferential skin removal and body contouring that extends all the way around. It is mainly done for those following a massive weight loss.
