What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, or hands. It involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the top layer(s) of skin to peel off, revealing smoother, healthier-looking skin underneath.

Why a chemical peel?

Are you seeing a dull complexion, signs of aging, discoloration, and an unbalanced complexion when you look in the mirror? Chemical peels use a mild acid to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells, revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. In addition to giving you a healthy glow, a chemical peel in Austin with our team can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. The many benefits of a chemical peel include:

  • Treating active acne
  • Minimizing pores
  • Erasing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Fading discoloration
  • Improving skin texture
  • Improving acne scarring
  • Improving skin clarity

How does a chemical peel work?

Austin Plastic Surgery Institute chemical peels have been used for decades to help resolve skin surface irregularities and maintain smooth and luminous skin. They are one of the most trusted and effective ways to resurface the skin. Our Licensed Medical Aestheticians and Nurses are here to help you look and feel your best. They will apply a chemical solution to the top layers of the skin, which will work to peel away and destroy damaged or dead cells. Through this peeling process, a rejuvenated layer of skin is left behind. Chemical peels can be used on the face or neck to help improve fine lines, acne scars, uneven skin tone, sun spots, freckles, pigmentation, and rough or scaly patches.

Types of chemical peels

We offer many different types of chemical peels for all skin types and skin issues. Some of the more popular peels we offer are:

VI Peel

A VI peel is a blend of alpha-hydroxy, TCA, and Phenol acids. This peel will treat your skin on all different levels addressing sun damage, texture, fine lines, and acne. The phenol numbs the skin making it virtually painless. Great for all skin types!

TCA Peel

TCA (trichloroacetic acid) can be used in varying strengths and is most commonly used for medium-depth peeling. We offer both 10% and 20% TCA peels. The TCA peel is great for surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes, and pigmentation problems. TCA is used on the face and under the eyes, as well as other areas of the body such as hands, forearms, and chest.

Cosmelan Peel

Cosmelan Peel targets all types of pigmentation, including melasma. It helps fade pigment and reduce further pigment from surfacing.

The treatment experience – chemical peels in Austin

The process for applying a chemical peel is generally the same for each type but will vary slightly depending on the level of solution being applied. First, the face is thoroughly cleaned. Then, the chemical agent is then brushed onto the skin. You can expect to feel some mild stinging at this time. The face is then washed, and a cool saline compress is applied to act as a neutralizer. You need to apply sunscreen and limit sun exposure as much as possible.
