Breast augmentation is a procedure that increases the fullness and projection of the breasts. It can enhance the shape, firmness, and size of the breasts for patients who have naturally small breasts, patients whose breasts have lost firmness and volume following pregnancy and breastfeeding, and patients who have one breast that is significantly smaller than the other (asymmetry). At Austin Plastic Surgery Institute, we get a lot of questions regarding this surgery. Here are the most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation and the answers.

What types of implants are available?

This procedure is performed with breast implants made of either saline or silicone material. The implants can be smooth, textured, anatomically shaped, or round. During your initial consultation, you and your doctor will discuss the best implant type for your individual needs.

Where are the implants placed?

Breast implants may be placed either under the pectoral muscle (submuscular) or over the muscle and under the breast tissue (subglandular). Each implant location has certain advantages and disadvantages that can be discussed in detail with your doctor during your consultation.

Is there an age requirement for breast augmentation patients?

It is highly recommended that patients have breasts that are fully developed and be over the age of 18 prior to undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Because the breast tissue will continue to change as development progresses, the results will be more predictable and long-lasting for patients who are fully developed. The FDA has approved saline implants for breast augmentation in women who are at least 18 years old and silicone implants for patients who are at least 22 years old. However, both implants are FDA approved for breast reconstruction in patients of any age.

Do breast implants have to be replaced after a certain amount of time?

Although there is not a specific amount of time that breast implants last, they are not considered lifetime devices. Implants do not need to be replaced as long as they look and feel normal, but over time they may need to be replaced if complications develop.

Is breast augmentation covered by health insurance?

In most cases, insurance will not cover the cost of breast augmentation surgery. However, if the surgery is necessary to correct breast asymmetry resulting from underdevelopment or injury, insurance may cover some or all of the cost. It is best to request information from your insurance company to find out its specific coverage policy.
