How does sculptra work?

Sculptra is an injectable that ultimately creates volume using patented poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to add volume to key areas of the face. It is excellent for stimulating collagen production, which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines, sunken cheeks, and hollow temples, and can thicken the skin over time. The overall goal is to create youthful results now, while also giving you the ability to enjoy long-lasting results.

Overview – The Sculptra story

Sculptra is approved by the FDA to address the natural loss of fat beneath the skin. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid and stimulates natural collagen growth, increasing the thickness of skin over time, smoothing etched-in wrinkles and lines. Austin Plastic Surgery Institute offers Sculptra injections to enhance skin quality. This injectable is a favorite of celebrities – and at APSI, we can help you melt away the years. Sculptra is unique in that its effects are long-lasting; they were shown in a clinical study to last for up to two years after the first treatment session. Results are natural-looking and appear gradually in the weeks ahead – a very rewarding experience.

Administering Sculptra

Sculptra is administered during an in-office appointment that typically takes about 30 minutes. The injection treatment, including the dosage and injection location, is tailored during the procedure to fulfill the patient’s specific needs. The injection is given through a tiny syringe to localized areas on the face. You may feel the small prick as the needle inserts through the skin, but any pain or discomfort can be controlled with a topical anesthetic or numbing injection if desired. For the greatest results, the average patient is recommended to have 2-3 injections every 4-6 weeks. Too much product too early can lead to nodules forming, so it must be spaced out.

What to expect?

Immediately following your Sculptra treatment at Austin Plastic Surgery Institute, there will be some mild swelling and redness at the injection site. This will subside a few hours after the procedure. You are free to resume your normal activities immediately, but exercise should be avoided for a few hours. After the injection, an easy after-care procedure helps to ensure lasting effects. Results following Sculptra will become apparent gradually during the weeks after the procedure. The result is that the surface of the skin will appear younger and restored. The peak volume is at 6 months and the effects should last 2-3 years.

Sculptra FAQs

BOTOX or Sculptra?

Sculptra is the only filler that produces long-term, gradual results. Injectable fillers help to decrease wrinkles by adding volume to certain facial structures, which creates a smooth result on the surface of the skin. BOTOX, which temporarily freezes the underlying muscle, , works only on dynamic lines (lines that are visible when you animate). Sculptra and dermal fillers work to correct static lines (lines that are visible when your facial muscles are at rest). A skilled practitioner will be able to determine which procedure would garner the best results.

When is the best age for Sculptra injections?

Individuals who wish to soften and decrease facial lines and wrinkles gradually may be candidates for Sculptra. The most common age to receive Sculptra® injections is between ages 30-55, however, it is also common for patients who are younger and older than this range to receive injections.

How long does Sculptra last?

Sculptra is different from other fillers because the results usually last several years. Sculptra is the only long-lasting filler to improve the shape and look of the face, and the results appear gradually without a dramatic immediate change.

Where is Sculptra injected?

Sculptra is injected directly into the face and helps restore chin wrinkles, lines surrounding the mouth, and the deep lines between the nose and mouth.

Is Sculptra safe?

Sculptra is approved by the FDA and has a long history of safety worldwide since 1999. Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid that the human body naturally produces and is the same product used in dissolvable sutures that has been around for many years. Reported side effects include discomfort, bruising, swelling or redness, bruising, and a few others. Bumps have sometimes occurred as noticeable when applying pressure to the injected area. Please consult our team if any of these side effects concern you.
