How does laser hair removal work?

Light skin and dark hair are an ideal combination for most laser hair removal systems, but our advanced laser system can target dark hair, even in patients with dark skin. Our laser hair removal system emits light energy that passes through the skin, without harming it, and is absorbed by the darker color of the hair follicle – the natural structure that produces hair. The light damages the follicle, rendering it unable to produce hair.

What areas can be treated?

The areas of the body for men and women that can be treated with laser hair removal include:

  • Facial hair
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Chest hair
  • Hair on the abdomen
  • Underarms
  • Back

What is the laser hair removal procedure?

Depending on what area is being treated, numbing cream may be applied before treatment begins. During the laser hair removal session, the laser will be moved over the treatment area as the light pulses, targeting the unwanted hair follicles. You may feel some discomfort, but it is generally very tolerable.

The laser will damage the follicles, so they no longer produce hair. Laser hair removal is not permanent, but it will dramatically reduce hair growth in the treatment area. After the initial 4-6 sessions, you may need maintenance sessions periodically, as factors like hormonal changes can cause a regrowth of hair.

Your laser hair removal treatment plan

The follicles producing unwanted hair must be treated in a series of four to six sessions, as the hair can only be treated during the growth phase of the hair. The treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes and is performed about every four weeks.

Laser hair removal FAQs

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

Anyone with unwanted hair is a candidate for laser hair removal. Our advanced laser system can remove unwanted hair on clients of all skin and hair colors and types. The number of sessions that will be required to produce the desired results will depend on the quantity of hair in the area. If you have lighter hair, you may need a few more treatments.

Why so many sessions?

Hair growth occurs in cycles. Some hairs may be in the middle of their growth phase during the treatment session, while others may be dormant. Spreading out the treatment allows the dormant hairs to grow and gives the area time so that all the hairs are eventually targeted during treatment. Between treatments, the hairs that do grow can be shaved because the follicle is not affected.

What is the recovery time after laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal results in zero downtime. The skin will be pink, and you may have a tingling sensation on the treated area for several hours. You are free to go back to your day as usual after your treatment.

Will the hair grow back?

Laser hair removal is considered an excellent solution for hair removal, but you may need a yearly treatment to keep all unwanted hair growth under control, as some follicles may not have been hit by your series of treatments. Although most of the hair in the area will be gone forever, a few hairs can pop up over time. A few unwanted hairs are far easier to manage and can be removed with an additional treatment.
