Dr. Scott Haydon talks with us about the most popular procedures for men in body contouring

Years ago it was taboo to discuss plastic surgery. Now we have social media explosions as well as reality shows that show poorly done plastic surgery. No field of medicine has ever been popularized like plastic surgery. Gone are the days of plastic surgery being solely for the rich and famous. Gone also is the notion that plastic surgery is only for women. Traditionally 90% of our patients have been women, however now more than ever, men have begun to inquire about procedures to improve their appearance.

Man boobs (Moobs?) have become a big target and focus for body contouring. Gynecomastia is the medical term for enlarged breast tissue in men. Sometimes it is fatty tissue while other times there can be firm nodules. The vast majority of the time the cause is unknown, however marijuana, steroids and some medications can be the offenders. Liposuction can be used to reduce the volume, however it typically takes a specialized type of machine like the Power Assisted Liposuction (PALS) to get a good result. Actual surgical excision of remaining nodules is often necessary and can be done through a small incision at the border of the areola. The end result allows guys to feel comfortable wearing pretty much anything and more importantly going without their shirt.

Speaking of liposuction, many men are coming in to help contour their waistlines and get rid of their love handles. While this is not a weight loss procedure, it can remove fat directly below the skin and above the muscles. This requires anesthesia and several days off work, but the fat removed can be done in a very precise manner. The entire waistline can be restored. This is in stark contrast to noninvasive treatments such as CoolSculpting where an area is targeted but has a very fixed end point. Precision is essential to getting the desired result. There is also fat that lives around the organs on the inside of the abdomen, but that is out of bounds for the surgeon. Only weight loss can correct that area of fullness. Ideal Protein is a weight loss strategy that we have implemented to help with those in need of a new start.

Whether it’s surgery to restore a more youthful look or skin care to provide a refreshed appearance, Austin Plastic Surgery Institute is here for you.
